2018 Walter Reed Distinguished Achievement Awards

Congratulations to the co-recipients of the 2018 Walter Reed Distinguished Achievement Award: Richard G. Azizkhan, MD, Res ’83, and Joachim J. Tenuta, MD ’87. This award recognizes professional accomplishments, outstanding innovation, and exemplary leadership in the field of medicine.

Dr. Azizkhan is the president and CEO of Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska. He is also a professor of surgery and pediatrics at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He has published extensively and authored more than 200 papers and chapters, as well as five books. He has also been active in establishing numerous international medical education exchange programs and medical humanitarian activities in Central Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

As orthopaedic surgeon for the U.S. Army’s elite Special Forces Operational Detachment, Dr. Tenuta served in Somalia, Haiti, the Middle East and North Africa. He was also instrumental in the development and implementation of the critical role of orthopaedics at Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany. He retired from military service in 2011, at the rank of Colonel and began practice with Capital Region Orthopaedics, where he has remained involved in resident education at Albany Medical College.
