February 20, 2016 — Charles H. Henderson, III, MD, ’65 is the 2015 Outstanding Medical Alumnus Award recipient in recognition of his loyalty to and leadership of the UVA Medical Alumni Association and Medical School Foundation. The award was presented at the 50th Annual Meeting on February 20, 2016 at The Omni Homestead Resort.

Dr. Henderson was born in Norton, Va., and was educated in the public school system, graduating from Burton High School in 1956. After attending Davidson College for two years, he graduated from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia in 1961 and the UVA School of Medicine in 1965. After completing an internship at Cincinnati General Hospital, he spent two years in the Air Force as a captain at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida from 1966 to 1968. After completing his internship, he became interested in radiology and completed his residency at the University of Virginia hospital from 1968 to 1971 and served on the teaching faculty from 1971 to 1972.

In 1972, he joined Rockingham Radiology at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va., and practiced until his retirement in 2001.

Charlie served on the UVA Medical Alumni Association’s Board of Directors from 1997-2002 and the UVA Health Foundation Board from 2010-2015.  Charlie is currently the president of the UVA Medical School Foundation Board of Trustees. During his time as a trustee, he played an active role in the Investment, Finance, and Compensation Committees and served as the representative to UVA’s Council of Foundations.  Under his leadership, the Foundation’s endowment has grown to over $60 million and will see an endowment payout to the UVA Health System of $2.7 million in fiscal year 2017.

Charlie is the representative for the UVA Medical School Class of 1965 and has led significant fundraising efforts benefitting the school.  At their 50th Reunion in 2015, the class raised $1.2 million through the reunion giving program. The class has established two scholarships and endowed the White Coat Ceremony, which provides every incoming medical student with an embroidered white coat as well as a reception for students and their families on the Lawn.

Charlie and his wife Mary have two sons, Charles IV and James, both of whom graduated from the University of Virginia, and four grandchildren.

Charlie and Mary are generous supporters of many areas of the university, especially the School of Medicine. In addition to supporting all of the class projects, Charlie and Mary established the Charles and Mary Henderson Family Scholarship and the Charles and Mary Henderson Faculty Fund for Excellence.

“It is truly an honor to work alongside Charlie and I cannot think of a more deserving recipient for this year’s Outstanding Alumnus Award,” said Elizabeth A. Carr, MD, ’88, president of the UVA Medical Alumni Association Board of Directors.
