How many times can I HOST a student?
You are welcome to host a student (or multiple) students as often as your schedule allows.
What time of year will the visits take place?
Most residency interviews occur during the months of October through January.
Will the students spouse travel with him/her?
This can be arranged on a case‐by‐case basis.
Who are the HOST volunteers?
All hosts are UVA medical alumni – they have attended the University of Virginia for their medical education and/or for their residencies and fellowships.
Where are HOSTS available?
We have alumni host in many cities across the country (participating cities). As the program expands in the coming years, hosts will be recruited (hopefully) in any and all
cities that UVA students travel.
What will the students expect from the HOST?
Alumni hosts are asked to provide anything from overnight accommodations in their home, to transportation to and from the interviews and airport, home cooked meals, guided tours of the area, and invaluable insights on the regional medical community.
How do I sign up to be a HOST?
Complete and submit online the Alumni Registration Form. The Medical Alumni Office will then contact you to begin the match process.
Do I contact the student I am matched with?
The MAA will inform the student that they have been matched and will share your contact information with them. It is up to the student to contact you about their travel and interview plans.
How far in advance will I be contacted?
Students are asked to contact their respective host as soon as they receive the contact information. Be sure to exchange cell phone/e‐mail contact information. It is also a good idea to re‐contact your student prior to your visit if you haven’t already heard from them.
What happens if travel or interview plans change or get cancelled?
The student that you are hosting will contact your as soon as possible to let you know about any change in their travel plans.
Do I need to do anything after the visit is over?
The students are asked to take a photo of the host family with him/her to submit to the Medical Alumni Office so that it can be posted to the MAA/MSF website. You will also receive a short online evaluation at the end of each visit so that feedback can be tracked and used to improve the program. You are also welcome to keep in touch with the student you hosted if he/she has any follow‐up questions.
Who do I contact if I have questions about the HOST program?
Please contact Kristin Roth at the Medical Alumni Office, (434)924‐9997, kristinroth@virginia.edu.
