Established by Dr. Richard Coffman Shrum (Class of 1942; deceased in 2011) and his wife, Maureen Parrott Shrum (deceased in 2008), and by their two sons who are both graduates of the UVA School of Medicine, in appreciation for: 1) William A. Herndon scholarship provided to Dr. Shrum from 1938-1942, and 2) a temporary, part-time position given to Dr. Shrum by the UVA School of Medicine in 1956, when after nearly 13 years in the Medical Corp, U.S. Army, he came to Charlottesville to go into solo, private practice of general surgery. Scholarships are provided on the basis of need.
