FAQ For Host Volunteers

How many times can I host?
You are welcome to host as often as your schedule allows.

What time of year will the visits take place?
Most residency interviews occur during the months of October through January.

Will the student’s spouse travel with him/her?
This can be arranged on a case‐by‐case basis.

Who are the host volunteers?
The majority of hosts are UVA medical alumni – they have attended the University of Virginia for their medical education and/or for their residencies and fellowships.  There are a few housestaff and medical student parents who have offered to host as well.

Where are hosts available?
We have hosts in most major cities across the country.  As the program expands, we hope to have Host volunteers in all cities that UVA students travel.

What will the students expect from the host?
Hosts are asked to provide anything from overnight accommodations in their home, to transportation to and from the interviews and airport, home cooked meals, guided tours of the area, and invaluable insights on the regional medical community.

How do I sign up to be a host?
Complete and submit the online Host Volunteer Registration Form. The MAA will then contact you to begin the match process.

Do I contact the student I am matched with?
The MAA will inform the student that they have been matched and will share your contact information with them. It is up to the student to contact you about their travel and interview plans.

How far in advance will I be contacted?
Students are asked to contact their host as soon as they receive the contact information. Be sure to exchange cell phone/e-mail contact information. It is also a good idea to re-contact your student prior to your visit if you haven’t already heard from them.

What happens if travel or interview plans change or get canceled?
The student that you are hosting will contact you as soon as possible to let you know about any change in their travel plans.

Do I need to do anything after the visit is over?
The students are asked to take a photo of the host family with him/her to submit to the MAA so that it can be posted to the MAA/MSF website. You will also be asked to complete an online evaluation about your Host Program experience.

Who do I contact if I have questions about the Host program?
