Terry L. Whipple, MD ’71,  has been recently named lifetime honorary president of the International Wrist Arthroscopy Society (IWAS). The honor was announced at the annual meeting of the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (IFSSH) in Berlin, Germany. Dr. Whipple is known for developing the surgical technique and much of the instrumentation used for arthroscopic surgery of the wrist joint, now employed worldwide for traumatic and degenerative wrist pathology. Whipple’s techniques initiated minimally invasive surgery for the wrist and were first published in his textbook, Arthroscopic Surgery: The Wrist in 1992.

An innovator and widely published in sports medicine and arthroscopy, Dr. Whipple has also developed specific guidelines for medical expert witnesses. In 2023 he founded Injury Analytics, LLC to assist the legal profession with personal injury litigation cases.

Dr. Whipple is married to plastic surgeon Ruth L. Hillelson, MD, who completed residency training in general surgery residency at UVA.
