We sadly announce the passing of Dr. Andrew Gessner Briggs III on July 2, 2023, in Annapolis, MD. Born on May 16, 1931, Andrew’s life was marked by intellectual rigor, tenacity, and compassion.

Andrew served as a respected psychiatrist at John Umstead Hospital, NC, impacting many lives over his 40-year career. His indefatigable work ethic, caring nature, and resilience were both admired and passed onto his children.

Andrew began his educational journey at Hampden-Sydney College, excelling academically and athletically. His love for sports transformed into a lifelong race walking passion, earning him national rankings as a senior athlete. His medical degree from the University of Virginia laid the groundwork for his successful career in psychiatry. Andrew met his future wife, Aletta, during his residency at UNC Chapel Hill, and they married on September 6, 1958.

Devoted to his wife and family, Andrew’s love was inspiring. Their children, Linda, Carol, and John, grew under his nurturing guidance and mirrored his values. He cherished being a grandfather to Diana and Erica Otis. Andrew also had immense love for his dogs, Kiska and Snoopy.

An eclectic reader and artist, Andrew’s interests spanned from dinosaurs and time to collages and family history. After retiring in Butner, NC, Andrew moved to Annapolis in 2015. His final years were filled with simple joys – cherished conversations and visits with family and friends, including his cousin, Betty Waller.

Remembered for his empathy, understanding, and engaging conversations, Andrew leaves a lasting legacy. His life, filled with love, dedication, and the pursuit of varied passions, will be forever missed and eternally cherished.
