Dr. Arthur High (Pie) Garst Jr. of Roanoke, Va., ended his battles with congestive heart failure and dementia on November 18, 2018, at his home with his wife by his side.

Born on October 11, 1932, in Boones Mill, Va., his younger years were spent on the family apple farm, Occanneechi Orchards. After elementary school in Boones Mill, he attended Fishburne Military School before going to college at Hampden-Sydney and Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). After serving in the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg (where he met his wife), he graduated from University of Virginia Medical School. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Roanoke for his entire career and retired in 1996.

He is remembered for his compassion mixed with humor. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Roanoke. Pie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Hauser Garst; their two sons, Arthur High Garst III and wife, Lori Meeks Garst, and their children, Arthur High Garst IV and Elisabeth Tucker Garst of Asheville, N.C.; John Callan Garst and wife, Martha Edwards Garst, and their children, Jack Edwards Garst, Callan Jane Garst, and John Roscoe Garst of Boones Mill, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur High Garst Sr. and Elva Ferguson Garst; his sister, Anne; and three brothers, Jack, Fred, and Cardwell.
