Evan H. Ashby Jr., 94,  passed away February 14, 2018.

Known to many as “Doc,” he was born August 18, 1923, in Remington, Va. He attended John Barton Payne High School and Randolph Macon College, and received his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a lifetime member of the American Legion.

While in Remington, he practiced family medicine and attended the births of more than 1,600 babies. He also served on the Remington Town Council, as mayor of Remington and as a member of the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors. He served as chief of the medical staff at Fauquier Hospital in 1968. Dr. Ashby was medical advisor for athletic teams at Fauquier High School from 1963 to 1969.

In 1969, he was named director of medical services at Appalachian State University in North Carolina and continued in that position until his retirement in 1991. While at ASU, Dr. Ashby continued his love of working with young athletes and sports teams and never missed an ASU football game.

Dr. Ashby was a medical examiner in North Carolina and Virginia until his 85th birthday. He was a charter member of the Remington Volunteer Rescue Squad and served in the fire department. He also was a member of the Watauga County Rescue Squad where he served a stint as chief. After his retirement, he moved to Fancy Gap and continued his love of emergency services by becoming a member of the Cana Volunteer Fire Department. He served as president of the Remington Lions Club and a member of the North Caroline AIDS Task Force, and was a professor emeritus at Appalachian State.

An avid photographer, he took thousands of pictures of the sports teams, wildlife and medical services.

Survivors include his three children, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
