Friends and family are celebrating the life of Dr. Louis Joseph Benton, Jr., who died at his winter home on Amelia Island on May 10, 2020.

Dr. Benton, a retired orthopedic surgeon, was born on February 5, 1941, in Ogdensburg N.Y. The son of Dr. Louis J. Benton and Margot Menkel Benton, he graduated from Williams College in 1962, and received his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1966.

He obtained his surgical training from Cornell Medical Center in New York, and his orthopedic training at the Hospital for Special Surgery, also in New York. In addition, he was an othopedic fellow at the Nuffield Orthopedic Center in Oxford, England, and obtained a hand surgery fellowship at Baylor University in Dallas. Louis will be remembered for his love of family, gift for friendship, passion for boats, voracious reading, love of pranks, hilarious storytelling, and love of animals. He was happiest on the Saint Lawrence and on his island. His ashes will be scattered on the river.
