Dr. Melvin Hugh Burke died on September 12, 2018. He was born in Strasburg, Virginia on March 22, 1927. It was there that he met his future wife, Marian.

Melvin completed undergraduate and medical school at the University of Virginia. Upon graduation, he and Marian married and moved to Detroit, Michigan to complete his internship. They then returned to Virginia for his residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Dr. Burke established an anesthesiology practice with Dr. John Rosenthal in Norfolk, Virginia, introducing spinal anesthesia to Tidewater. There Melvin and Marian raised three sons.

Retiring in 1989, they moved to Williamsburg, enjoying an active and happy life until Marian’s death in 2010. Melvin continued to Iive in his home in Williamsburg until his death. He was an avid reader, a civil war historian, and a collector of art and books.

Survivors include sons Bryan (Page), Kevin (Carol), and Scott (Andrea); three grandchildren Patrick (Laura), Katie (Travis), and Margaret; as well as four great-grandchildren. Dr. Burke will be buried in a private ceremony in Strasburg, Virginia.
