Dr. Ullin Whitney Leavell, Jr., age 94, husband of Linda Woodall Carey, died after a brief illness on Monday, July 17, 2017. In addition to his wife, Dr. Leavell is survived by his son, U. Whitney Leavell III (Harriett), his daughter, Jennie K. Leavell, and his grandchildren, Walton H. Leavell and Sarah Brooks Leavell.

Dr. Leavell, a dermatologist, was born in Wu Chow, China on November 10, 1922, the son of missionaries. He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University and received medical training at Duke University and Western Reserve Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Leavell was a professor of medicine and chair of dermatology at the University Of Kentucky College Of Medicine from 1971 until his retirement in 1997. He served as a captain in the US Army in post-war Japan before he opened his private practice in Lexington in 1951.

Later, his former student and beloved friend, Dr. Ira Mersack, became his practicing partner. Their practice evolved into what is now Dermatology Associates of Kentucky. Dr. Leavell wrote numerous ground-breaking papers in the field of dermatology, many of which are still current today. He was on staff at Cardinal Hill Hospital, Central Baptist, Good Samaritan, St. Joe’s, Shriner’s Hospital for Children, U. K. Medical Center, and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital.

His lifelong interest in photography led to him becoming the first physician in Lexington to be trained in the use of electron microscopic photography. He won several national Kodak awards for his photographs. He was a member of the Keeneland Club, Idle Hour Country Club, and former member of the Lexington and Vero Beach Rotary clubs and the Lexington and Vero Beach Camera Clubs.

Memorials may be made to the Dr. Ullin Leavell Professorship of Dermatology Fund; Department of Surgery Office of the Chairman, 800 Rose St., Lexington, KY 40536.
