Michael T. Compton, MD ’97, recently published Struggle and Solidarity: Seven Stories of How Americans Fought for Their Mental Health Through Federal Legislation (American Psychiatric Association Publishing, 2023).  The book explains how major federal laws that are not about mental health (such as the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933, the National Labor Relations Act of 1935, the Clean Air Act of 1963, and the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1965) can have major impacts on the “social determinants of mental health” and thus on mental health in America. The chapters tell interesting stories about these and other examples of the most important mental health laws ever enacted.
