Dr. Edward Monroe Spencer, age 83, of Moneta, VA passed away on September 15, 2018.
Edward was born on December 14, 1934 in Mason, West Virginia to the late Fred and Sarah Spencer. Our grandfather had a gentle and loving spirit. He was a quiet observer with an inquisitive mind. When we remember our grandfather, we think of his laugh and the way he valued compassion and knowledge. We will always remember his love and passion for sailing, flying, cooking, astronomy, and jazz music. He found a way to combine those passions in his long and distinguished career as a naval lieutenant commander, pediatrician, published author, and biomedical ethicist at the University of Virginia.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lois; as well as his children, Dawn Williams and husband, Doni, and Julie Litz; sister, June Pierson and husband, Ron Pierson; his grandchildren, Kristin and husband, De´Shay, Justin and wife, Bryanna, Brooke, and Jessica who have written this obituary in his honor. He has left behind a family that loves and will miss him, including his two miniature schnauzers Taz and Manny, whom he treated like his children.
As we move forward without him, we will take solace in the fact that we can connect with his spirit both in the skies and at the lakes and beaches where he lived and frequented throughout his long and meaningful life.
In honoring Dr. Spencer’s wishes, we ask that you remember his warmth and compassion and think of the family as no services are planned at this time.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to The Parkinson´s Foundation: www.parkinson.org/ways-to-give in Edward´s honor.
