He attended the University of Virginia as an Echol’s Scholar. His love for The University led to his lifelong passion for UVA sports. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Virginia Medical School. He did his residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he fell in love with Charleston. He spent his career working as an Internist in North Charleston and West Ashley.

Stewart had many interests, including fishing, boating, reading, Broadway shows, volunteering with Special Olympics, watching his daughters play basketball, and his son play lacrosse. The part of his life that made him most proud was his family. He was married for 28 years to his devoted wife, Sharon. He is also survived by his loving children, Christopher, Nicholas, Elizabeth, and Katherine, all of Mt. Pleasant; his parents, R. Stewart and Sara Eads; brother Matthew and his wife Rebecca, nephew Nathan, and nieces Caroline and Anna.
