C. Bruce Alexander, MD ’71, has published “History of Pathology at UAB: 1945-2008,” with co-author Margaret N. Dotzler. The book chronicles the formation and growth of the Department of Pathology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham between 1945 and 2008 and its rise to a critical component of a world-class academic health system. The Department of Pathology was one of the first departments to coalesce within the newly established medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1945.

Alexander joined the faculty of the UAB Department of Pathology in 1979. He is board certified in anatomic, clinical, and forensic pathology. He was president of the Academy of Laboratory Physicians and Scientists in 2008, president of the American Society for Clinical Pathology in 2011-12, and president of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical school honor society, in 2012-13. Alexander became Professor Emeritus at UAB in 2017.
