The UVA Medical Alumni Association’s Host Program provided an invaluable opportunity for cost-effective, comfortable, and close lodging during a very expensive time in my life. I will be forever grateful for my hosts’ contributions and hope I can ‘pay it forward’ someday. ~ Joshua J., SMD ’16
The goal of our Host Program is to match UVA hosts across the country with fourth year medical students traveling for their residency interviews during the months of October through January.
Volunteers open their homes to a student (and possible spouse) for an overnight stay of one-to-two days and/or agree to speak with students who have questions about the residency program or the community where they are interviewing. Although not required, meals, transportation, and tours may be offered by the hosting alumni. Our hope is for the generosity of alumni to alleviate some of the financial burden faced by the students.
This is not only a great opportunity for students, but for the participating hosts as well. For those who live far away and have limited time to offer, this is an extraordinary opportunity to volunteer for the University and stay engaged with the School of Medicine and its current students. A truly reciprocal experience, the volunteers will share their experiences and insights, while the students can offer their unique perspectives and updates on the medical school.
