The following message from Dean Melina Kibbe, MD, was shared via email with alumni of the UVA School of Medicine on August 6:
Dear UVA School of Medicine Alumni,
It is with mixed emotions that I share the news of my upcoming departure from the University of Virginia. I have accepted the role of president at UTHealth Houston and will be stepping down as dean of the UVA School of Medicine. My final day will be Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
Serving as your dean over the past four years has been one of the greatest honors of my career. During this time, I have had the pleasure of working alongside extraordinary faculty, students, and staff, and of connecting with you, our passionate and dedicated alumni community. Your loyalty to the school, your commitment to our missions, and your generous support have meant more to me than I can express.
Our alumni are the heart of our legacy and the driving force behind our continued excellence. I am deeply grateful for the many ways you have championed our efforts, from mentoring students to supporting scholarships, advancing research, and helping us shape the next generation of physician-leaders.
While I am excited for this new chapter, I will carry with me an abiding affection for UVA and for all of you who make this place so special. Thank you for your trust, your partnership, and the warm welcome you extended to me and my family from the very beginning.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Melina R. Kibbe, MD, FACS, FAHA
