Recent news about alumni of the UVA School of Medicine:

  • Patrick D. Melmer, MD ’17, was recently promoted to associate program director of the General Surgery Residency at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is an assistant professor in the Division of Acute Care Surgical Services and also serves as the director of surgical simulation for VCU’s Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety.
  • Carly Day, MD ’06, is the current president of American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, which has 5,000+ members. For the past six and half years, she has served as head team physician for Purdue University.
  • Bob Brown, MD ’67, is writing a weekly column in theroanokestar.com. Dr. Brown shares, “I have been blessed abundantly with a loving family, trusting friends, kind and generous classmates, and 94 years of the gift of life. BUT when I grow up, I want to be an author.”
  • LB Sandy Rock, MD ’70, MPH, published his memoir, “The ADHD MD—A 70’s Memoir: A decade of medical practice in Appalachia” as an eBook on Amazon in May 2025
  • Lee Fanning, MD ’70, FACP, and his wife, Claudia, have been involved with Assist ME for the past three years. It is a 501(c)3 organization involved in collecting, cleaning , repairing, and recycling medical equipment to the underserved and often disabled. Dr. Fanning says, “Many people who receive the equipment could not be independent without it. In 2024, we gave away 1,600 units of equipment and the year before sent 100 sets of crutches to the Ukraine via Samaritan’s Purse. We now have 50 volunteers and the number of units given is growing rapidly each year.” He is also the author of “Rescues from the Sky,” “Contagion Chaser,” and “ Microbial Mysteries: A Rocky Road” under the pseudonym Lee Walters, MD.
