Colin Derdeyn, MD, Appointed Interim Dean
Colin Derdeyn, MD '88, has been appointed to the role of interim dean of the UVA School of Medicine, following Dean Melina Kibbe, MD's resignation, effective Sept. 3
The following message from University of Virginia leadership was shared via email with alumni of the UVA School of Medicine on August 12:
Dear UVA School of Medicine Alumni,
We are writing to announce that Colin Derdeyn, MD ’88, has been appointed to the role of interim dean of the School of Medicine. Dr. Derdeyn and Dean Kibbe will begin the leadership transition period immediately, with Dean Kibbe leaving her role effective Sept. 3. We wish to express our deep gratitude to Dr. Derdeyn for stepping into the interim role — he will bring wisdom and leadership strength to the position, guiding the School of Medicine forward in partnership with our superb faculty and staff.
Dr. Derdeyn was selected after many listening and discussion sessions with hundreds of members of the School of Medicine; interest in the selection process was high, with over 400 surveys completed. We are thrilled at the level of engagement in the process, as we recognize that transparency and involvement are key to the continued success of our School of Medicine. We are also grateful to Dr. Howard Goodkin, professor and former chair of neurology, for his support and participation in the process as an equally qualified, trusted, and respected candidate.
Dr. Derdeyn returned “home” to UVA — where he received both his undergraduate and medical degrees — in January 2024 as chair of radiology and medical imaging, following several distinguished clinical and leadership roles at University of Iowa Healthcare and Washington University School of Medicine/Barnes Jewish Hospital. He has served as a national thought leader in roles such as president of the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery and chair of the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
During Dr. Derdeyn’s term as interim dean, Dr. Cree Gaskin will be assuming the role of chair of radiology and medical imaging. We are grateful to both Dr. Derdeyn and Dr. Gaskin for answering the call and providing stability and collaborative leadership in their respective posts.
We are incredibly optimistic for the future of our School of Medicine; together with Dr. Derdeyn, we look forward to your continued engagement, input, and ideas as we navigate the months ahead.
Sincerely,
Mitchell H. Rosner, MD, MACP, FRCP
