Meeting the Challenge: Navigating Complex Pain Management Issues
Participation is free of charge and most appropriate for Physicians, Nurses, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, and other Healthcare Professionals.
Each session is accredited for 1 hour: you may choose to participate in a single session or multiple.
UVA Health Continuing Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The University of Virginia School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1TMCredit(s). Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with their participation in the activity.
The University Of Virginia School Of Medicine awards one hour of participation to each non-physician participant who completes this educational activity; more information will be provided at the session. UVA Medical School Alumni will have the opportunity to earn CME credit alongside their former classmates and current housestaff, and faculty, on a universally relevant topic. They will hear from current faculty with expertise in anesthesiology, pain management and pain psychology. This series will highlight Department of Anesthesiology pain programs as a resource for alums across the country, as well as for our local community.

Learning Objectives:
- Enhance understanding of drugs found in the communities and potential impact on your patients
- Recognize the unpredictability of illicit drugs and threats from illegal pharmacy sites on the internet.
- Discuss UVA Dept of Anesthesiology Office of Pain Management and Opioid Stewardship’s response to the opioid crisis
- Provide information on indications and strategies to initiate and manage buprenorphine in the outpatient setting.
Brief Description:
Dr. Chastain will address the dangers posed by fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills and illegal online pharmacies. Participants will learn about identified overdose dangers as well as novel substances recently identified in communities nationwide. She will then discuss the mission of OPMOS in this new reality. Then Dr. Holland will provide information on indications and strategies to initiate and manage buprenorphine in the outpatient setting.
This lecture will count as 1 CME/CE required by many states for opiate management and/or buprenorphine management.
