UVA Health Orthopedics Celebrates 100 Years
Alumnus and UVA Orthopaedic Surgery Chair Bobby Chhabra, MD, shares retrospective on department's impact
2026 marks the 100th anniversary of UVA Orthopedics, and alumnus A. Bobby Chhabra, MD ’95, Res ’01, is part of a new retrospective on the department’s impact.
Chhabra is the Lillian T. Pratt Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the David A. Harrison Distinguished Educator at the University of Virginia. He has served as department chair since 2013. He is also the director of the UVA Health Orthopaedic Center and is a team physician for the UVA Department of Athletics.
The retrospective, featured on the UVA Connect website, walks through some of the department’s milestone moments over the past century and shares how these accomplishments continue to help advance orthopedic medicine at UVA Health and across the nation.
As the department looks back on its history, UVA Orthopedics is also looking ahead to a bright future. “I think that we’re at the tip of the iceberg in what we’re going to accomplish. I’m so excited about continuing to hire talented people, maintain the great culture we have, advance the lab-to-bedside research we’re doing and to educate and mentor the next generation. We are really at the forefront as a department,” says Chhabra.
