The UVA Medical Alumni Association is pleased to present the 2020 Reed Lecture, featuring J. Kim Penberthy, PhD. The topic will be Resiliency. The lecture will feature strategies to help promote resilience and explore why it is important to help prevent burnout and promote the best quality patient care.

About J. Kim Penberthy, PhD

Jennifer “Kim” Penberthy, Ph.D., ABPP is the Chester F. Carlson Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She attended Wake Forest University where she obtained a BA and then a MA in experimental psychology and obtained her PhD in clinical psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed her fellowship training at the University of Virginia School of Medicine where she has been on faculty ever since.

Dr. Penberthy is a member of UVA Academy of Distinguished Educators, the UVA Leadership in Academic Matters Program, and is a Fellow of Humanism in Medicine at the University of Virginia. She is Co-Director of the Effective Communication and Coping Skills for Physicians, and founding member of Be Wise Peer Support and Stress Management Program which is dedicated to promoting mindfulness, wisdom, and compassion in medicine. Dr. Penberthy is dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion and exploring contemplative practices across cultures. She is past chair of the American Psychological Association (APA) Society of Clinical Psychology Diversity Committee and is a fellow in the APA Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology. She is also the past chair of the American Psychological Association Continuing Education Committee and the Marketing Chair for the American Board of Clinical Psychology.

Kim is a board-certified clinical psychologist and conducts research, teaches, and provides clinical care at UVA in psychiatry and the UVA Emily Couric Cancer Center. Her research interests include studying the mind-body relationship, exploring the mechanisms of action of psychotherapy, and promoting the health and wellbeing of healthcare professionals. She has published extensively on burnout, mindfulness and the impact of psychotherapy. She lectures and trains professionals internationally and her two most recent books are Persistent Depressive Disorders, published by Hogrefe, and Living Mindfully Across the Lifespan: An Intergenerational Guide which she co-authored with her daughter, Morgan Penberthy.
