Christopher D. Casscells, MD ’81
February 21, 2015 — Christopher D. Casscells, MD ’81 is the 2014 Outstanding Medical Alumnus Award recipient in recognition of his loyalty to and leadership of the UVA Medical Alumni Association and Medical School Foundation. The award was presented at the 49th Annual Meeting on February 21, 2015.
A 1981 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Casscells received his undergraduate degree at Yale University and completed both his general surgery residency and orthopaedic residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital. In 1986, he joined his father, S. Ward Casscells, MD ’39 and Theodore B. Strange, MD ’40, in their orthopaedic practice in Wilmington, Del. Today he continues as a solo practitioner specializing in joint replacement and arthroscopic sports medicine.
Casscells has served as a member of both the UVA Medical Alumni Association Board of Directors and the UVA Medical School Foundation Board of Trustees, currently serving as immediate past president of the Foundation. His wife, Susan, is also a current trustee. The Casscells, both long-time supporters of the University of Virginia, are also volunteers with our Host program.
Among other involvements at UVA, Casscells volunteers as a member of the UVA Health Foundation’s Board of Directors. He and Susan were also founding members of UVa Families and served on NCOUR (National Committee on University Resources), helping that campaign committee in raising $3 billion.
