Welcome, SMD’27

The incoming class of 160 medical students at the University of Virginia School of Medicine received their official welcome on August 11, 2023, at the White Coat Ceremony, endowed by the Class of 1965.

The annual ceremony is an important milestone for these future physicians and scientists, who were joined at Old Cabell Hall by their families, friends, and School of Medicine faculty and staff.

Speakers at the event included: Barry Collins, executive director of the UVA Medical Alumni Association and Medical School Foundation and associate dean for medical alumni affairs; Nora Kern, MD ’08, president of the UVA Medical Alumni Association Board of Directors; Misky Sharif, SMD’24, president of the School of Medicine’s Mulholland Society; Melina Kibbe, MD, dean of the School of Medicine and chief health affairs officer for UVA Health; and Meg Keeley, MD ’92, senior associate dean for education and professor of pediatrics.

White coats were presented to the students by: Laurie Archbald-Pannone, MD, Res ’05 (Dunglison College); John Densmore, MD ’95, PhD ’94, Res ’98, Fel ’01, (Hunter College); Dana Redick, MD, (Pinn College); Sean Reed, MD, Res ’07 (Reed College); and Dean Kedes, MD, PhD (Medical Scientist Training Program).

The ceremony was followed by a reception at Newcomb Hall.
