For the first time since 2019, the UVA Medical Alumni Association hosted Medical School Reunion Weekend, April 29 – May 1. The event was attended by nearly 600 MD alumni and their guests, a record turnout.

Classes ending in 2 and 7 from 1967-2002 celebrated their milestone reunions in Charlottesville with class dinners and social outings. In addition, reschedule milestone reunions were held for the Classes of 1965, 1970, 1971, 1976, 1980, 1986 and 1990 whose reunions in 2020 and 2021 were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In all, 16 classes held reunions over the weekend. The Classes of 1966, 1981, 1996 and 2001 held rescheduled reunion events in late-March and early-April.

On Saturday morning, reunion attendees enjoyed hearing from Dean Melina Kibbe, MD, of the UVA School of Medicine. Recipients of the UVA Medical Alumni Association’s alumni awards from 2020 and 2021 were also recognized:

• 2021 Walter Reed Distinguished Achievement Award: Lee M. Ellis, MD ‘83
• 2021 Early Achievement Award: Kyle B. Enfield, MD, Res ’06, Fel ’12 
• 2021 Distinguished Achievement Award in Biomedical Sciences: Carrie Cowardin, PhD ’16
• 2021 Outstanding Medical Alumnus Award: Joel Bruce, MD ’87
• 2020 Walter Reed Distinguished Achievement Award: Leonard S. Schleifer, MD ’77, PhD ’80
• 2020 Early Achievement Award: James A. Platts-Mills, MD ’09, Fel ’15
• 2020 Distinguished Achievement Award in Biomedical Sciences: Charles H. Evans, Jr., MD ’66, PhD ’69, Res ’71
• 2020 Outstanding Medical Alumnus Award: Wendy Davis, MD ’81

The UVA Distinguished Alumna Award was also presented during the morning program to Barbara L. Bass, MD ’79, by Abby Palko, director of the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center at UVA.
