In the Spotlight: Class of 2017 Graduates

Congratulations to the newest alumni of the University of Virginia School of Medicine! On May 21, the Class of 2017 walked the Lawn as part of the University’s annual graduation exercises before receiving their diplomas in a ceremony at Charlottesville’s Paramount Theater. During the diploma ceremony, the UVA Medical Alumni Association was honored to present two awards. The Outstanding Student Award was presented to Tamara Saint-Surin, and Ana Tucker and Stephen Mein were recognized as co-recipients of the Class of 1954 Community Service Award.

Here’s a quick overview of the UVA School of Medicine Class of 2017:

  • 151 graduates
  • Class members will be doing residencies in 31 states
  • 21 will be residents at UVA
  • 5 will enter residency programs at other Virginia hospitals

2017 Litz Award

Congratulations to Claire DeBolt, recipient of the 2017 Gratton Alexander Litz, III Award for outstanding performance during the Internal Medicine clerkship. The award recognizes a fourth-year student with the ability to apply medical knowledge clinically, while demonstrating compassion for patients.

Congratulations to Haakon Ragde, MD ’57, who was selected as the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) 2016 Honorary Member, the highest honor ASTRO bestows on distinguished cancer researchers, scientists and leaders in disciplines other than radiation oncology, radiobiology or radiation physics.
