Alumni Awards

Elizabeth A. Carr, MD

April 29, 2017 — Elizabeth A. Carr, MD ’88, is the 2016 Outstanding Medical Alumnus Award recipient in recognition of her loyalty to and leadership of the UVA Medical Alumni Association and Medical School Foundation. The award was presented on April 29 during Medical School Reunion Weekend 2017.

Dr. Carr obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, with Distinction, from the University of Virginia in 1984 and graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1988.  She was elected to the Raven Society in 1987.  She did her residency in pediatrics at the Medical College of Virginia (1988-1991), where she received the Emily Gardner Memorial Award for outstanding female resident in her class.  She is a fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics.  She works in private practice in Lake Oswego, Oregon, where she also serves as chair of the Charitable Giving Committee.  She has been a past member of the Executive and Marketing Committees in her practice. She worked for 14 years as an examiner at CARES (Child Abuse Response and Evaluation Services) Northwest, a clinic providing multidisciplinary evaluations for children who are suspected victims of abuse and neglect. Dr. Carr has provided trainings on this topic both locally and internationally.

Dr. Carr is past president of the UVA Club of Oregon, an NCOUR committee member and chairman of the Regional Selection Committee in Portland for the Jefferson Scholars Foundation.  She also served on the UVA Medical Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2005-2010 and again from 2011-2017. She served as chair of the Alumni Relations Committee for two years and was President of the MAA in 2015-2016.

A passionate supporter of current medical students, Dr. Carr has served as a panelist and speaker for many mentoring events as well as Host program volunteer for students interviewing in Oregon.

Dr. Carr is an active member of the Class of 1988, serving on reunion planning committees, contributing to class projects and attending reunions.

She is married to Kip Acheson, who is also a UVA alumnus, and is an avid traveler, jazz fan, and UVA basketball fan.

The UVA Medical Alumni Association is grateful to Dr. Carr for her many contributions, and we are pleased to present her with the 2016 award.
