E. Thomas Newbill, MD ’79
February 17, 2018 — E. Thomas Newbill, MD ’79, is the 2017 Outstanding Medical Alumnus Award recipient in recognition of his loyalty to and leadership of the UVA Medical Alumni Association and Medical School Foundation. The award was presented on February 17 during the UVA Medical Alumni Association’s 2018 Winter Retreat.
Dr. Newbill has been a loyal alumnus of the UVA School of Medicine for nearly four decades. He has served as the class representative for the Class of 1979 since 2008. Since graduating, he has served on seven reunion committees, overseen a successful fundraising campaign to establish a scholarship, and more. In other words, Dr. Newbill has been the heart of his class.
He has been a member of the UVA Medical Alumni Association Board of Directors since 2013 and is the immediate past president having served as president in 2016-2017.
Dr. Newbill has also been a passionate supporter of medical students, volunteering his counsel and network to them for many years. He has served as a MedConnect volunteer and has always responded to requests for students in need of help.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Duke University and a Master’s of Science degree from George Washington University. After graduating from medical school, he did two years of general surgery training in Chapel Hill. He returned to UVA to complete his residency in otolaryngology head and neck surgery in 1984.
Dr. Newbill practiced general ENT and ENT Allergy in Richmond for 26 years. Since his retirement, he has worked part-time at two hyperbaric oxygen and wound care centers in Richmond.
The UVA Medical Alumni Association is a stronger organization because of his contributions, and we are pleased to honor him with this award.
