Nora Kern, MD ’08

September 1, 2023 – The UVA Medical Alumni Association is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2023 Outstanding Medical Alumnus Award: Nora Kern, MD ’08.

Kern is the current president of the UVA Medical Alumni Association Board of Directors. She has served on the board since 2016 and was elected president in April 2023. She previously served as both a board member and member of the Alumni Relations Committee.

Kern’s dedication to medical students at UVA is evident in her volunteer work as a mentor, especially to female students. She has participated in the MAA’s MedConnect program as a “Women in Medicine” panelist, and she is passionate about supporting the unique needs of women considering a career in medicine.

Kern is very much invested in the UVA School of Medicine. She loves her time with second-year medical students during her teaching sessions as part of the Cells to Society curriculum on the genitourinary tract. She also serves as faculty mentor for students entering the field of urology as well as other fields, and she is dedicated to increasing the diversity of students going into the medical field and urology.

This year, students in the Class of 2027 directly benefited from Kern’s support through a gift she made, along with the Class of 1963, to purchase stethoscopes for all incoming MD students.

A proud Double ‘Hoo, Kern is an associate professor in the Department of Urology. She serves in several leadership roles including associate program director for the urology residency, fourth year clerkship director for the Urology ACE, faculty councilor for UVA’s chapter of AOA, and member of the admissions committee for the UVA School of Medicine. Regionally and nationally, Kern serves as the chair of the Mid-Atlantic Pediatric Urology Research Consortium and member of the organizing committee for the Urology Collaborative Online Video Didactics (COVID) lecture series that was created in response to the COVID-19 shutdown.

Congratulations to Dr. Kern on this well-deserved recognition.
