In the News: Wilkes Elected to NAM
Congratulations to Dean David S. Wilkes, MD, on his recent election to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). In October, Wilkes was one of 90 new regular members and 10 international members elected during NAM’s annual meeting. Wilkes is the dean of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and James Carroll Flippin Professor of Medical Sciences. He was recognized by the NAM “for leading his institutions to record levels of research funding; guiding the Harold Amos Faculty Development Program to markedly increase minority physician scientist trainees; and creating a paradigm shift and novel drug development when discovering autoimmunity contributes to chronic rejection post-lung transplantation and in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.”
Search for New Dean
Dean David S. Wilkes, MD, announced earlier this year that he will be stepping down in 2021. The search for his replacement is currently underway. “I am pleased to share that we already have over 50 highly qualified applicants from around the nation,” says K. Craig Kent, MD, executive vice president for health affairs at UVA. “This is a testament to the strength of our nationally recognized school of medicine as well as its current and prior leadership.
